About this topic

Europe has more capital cities per square mile than any other continent — a side effect of centuries of empire, fragmentation, and confederation packing dozens of seats of government into a region barely the size of Australia. Some serve nations of a few hundred thousand; others anchor major global economies. Most were already capitals when the United States was founded, and many trace their continuous role to the medieval period or earlier. Knowing them is a useful proxy for European political geography, the modern EU map, and the post-1991 sovereign states that emerged from the collapse of the Soviet bloc.
